Neck Pain Relief in Miami

Stiffness, headaches that start at the base of the skull, pain into the shoulder or arm. We find what is driving it and treat that.

Neck pain is treated chiropractically by finding what is actually restricting or irritating the cervical spine — a stiff joint, a disc, a nerve, or sustained posture load — and correcting it with targeted adjustment, soft-tissue work, and a plan to stop it recurring. Dr. Malavenda has treated necks in Miami since 1987.

What is actually causing your neck pain

Your neck holds up a head that weighs about 10 to 12 pounds, through seven small vertebrae with a great deal of mobility and comparatively little structural protection. That design is why the neck is so often the first thing to complain. The usual drivers we find:

CauseHow it usually feels
Joint restriction (facet)Sharp, one-sided, worse turning the head one direction
Postural / "tech neck"Dull ache across the base of the neck and shoulders, worse late in the day
Disc irritation or herniationDeep ache, often with pain, tingling, or weakness into the shoulder or arm
Whiplash from a crashStiffness and headache beginning hours to days after the accident
Muscle guarding / spasmTight, ropey band that limits movement in several directions
Cervicogenic headachePain starting at the base of the skull and wrapping forward

Why the neck causes headaches

The upper three cervical nerves share pathways with the nerves that supply the head and face. When the top of the neck is restricted or inflamed, the brain can interpret that signal as head pain. This is called a cervicogenic headache, and it is one of the most common and most frequently missed causes of recurring headache. It typically starts at the base of the skull and wraps toward the temple or behind one eye.

When neck pain needs urgent attention

See a clinician promptly, and go to an emergency department if these follow an injury, when neck pain comes with any of the following:

  • Progressive weakness, numbness, or clumsiness in an arm or hand
  • Problems with balance or walking
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Severe pain after a significant fall or crash
  • Fever with neck stiffness, or a sudden severe headache unlike any before

These are uncommon, but they matter. Dr. Malavenda screens for them at the evaluation, and refers out when something falls outside chiropractic care.

How we treat it

Dr. Malavenda examines you first, takes imaging when it is medically necessary, and explains what he found before treating. Care may include cervical adjustment, instrument-assisted adjustment if you prefer a gentler approach, soft-tissue and massage therapy, disc decompression where a disc is involved, acupuncture, and specific home exercises. Patients who work long hours at a desk or on hospital shifts also get a workstation and sleep-position plan, because without that the same problem returns.

Neck pain after a car accident

If your neck pain started after a crash, the clock matters. Florida's PIP law generally requires your first treatment within 14 days of the accident or your medical benefits can be denied, and whiplash pain very often does not appear on day one. See whiplash and auto-injury care and how the 14-day rule works.

Common questions

Is neck adjustment safe?

Yes. Cervical adjustment by a licensed chiropractic physician is one of the most widely performed treatments in musculoskeletal care, and Dr. Malavenda has been doing it in Miami since 1987. He examines you and reviews your history first, and he has a range of techniques — including gentle instrument-assisted options — so the approach fits you rather than the other way around.

Do I need an x-ray?

Only if Dr. Malavenda determines imaging is medically necessary to understand your condition and treat you safely.

How long until it improves?

Simple joint-restriction neck pain often responds within a few visits. Disc involvement, long-standing postural problems, and accident injuries take longer. You will get an honest estimate after the examination, not a contract.

Should I use ice or heat?

For a new, sharp, inflamed neck, ice for 15 minutes at a time usually helps more. For chronic stiffness without recent injury, heat before gentle movement tends to help. If one clearly feels better to you, use that one.
